There is a certain contradiction in left-wing thought which events like the Iraqi war and multi-culturalism brings to the fore. "Other," non-western cultures muse be respected, their traditions encouraged to survive in an increasingle globalized, capitalistic world. We must not have or inflict any form of political or cultural imperialism. But what happens if that particular culture encourages the sub-ordination of women, femal circumcision, tribalism! Can we not condemn such things, do we not have a moral imperative to do so and in so doing do we not break once and for all the argument that all cultures are equal?

The All-Ireland Final,

In spite of all the media excitement over today's all-Ireland final, at least two people besides myself have remarked on one of the most loneliest and depressing evocations of their childhood, the sound of Michael O Heithir's voice commentating on a GAA match on a warm Sunday afternoon in a small town in rural Ireland, his voice shrilling out from open front doors down dust speckled corridors. The horror, the horror.

Football and Politics.

Is there a direct correlation between your team doing well on the football pitch and the loss of political power or vice versa? Take the case of loyalism! Northern Ireland beat England for the first time since Caligula fell in love with a horse. The Republic was beaten by France, Rangers are doing fine and Celtic are floundering a bit but they, the loyalists, are burning Belfast because they can't meet President Bush at the drop of a hat. On the other hand, Republicans can ring up George and say they will be around in five minutes! Or maybe the more power one has the less things like football matters!
